# Galway Go Club

Go in Galway, every Tuesday. Casual, social, beginner-friendly.

Galway Go Club is a free, beginner-friendly club for the board game Go, also called Weiqi (围棋) or Baduk (바둑), meeting every Tuesday from 5:30 pm at Cadell, 31 Woodquay, Galway, Ireland (Eircode H91 P5K8). Boards and stones are provided, no booking is needed, and complete beginners are usually playing their first game within ten minutes.

## When and where

- **Day:** every Tuesday
- **Time:** 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm. No fixed start; people drift in from around 5:30 pm onwards
- **Venue:** Cadell, 31 Woodquay, Galway, H91 P5K8 ([Google Maps](https://www.google.com/maps/search/Cadell+31+Woodquay+Galway)). The club moved here in July 2026 from McSwiggans, just across the road
- **Cost:** free. Most people buy a tea, coffee or a pint from the venue
- **Booking:** none needed. Just show up

## What to expect

- Friendly matches, relaxed teaching games, and good chats over a pint or a coffee
- Never played before? We'll teach you the basics in minutes
- 9x9 boards for learning, 19x19 for longer games
- All levels welcome, from total beginners to seasoned dan players
- No fixed start. People drift in from around 5:30 pm onwards

## FAQ

**Do I need to know the rules?** Not at all. We'll teach you in a few minutes. The basics are simple. The strategy is what takes a lifetime.

**Do I need to bring equipment?** No. We have boards and stones. Just show up.

**Is it ok to come alone?** Most people do. You'll be paired up for a game straight away.

**How do I find you inside Cadell?** Just look for the Go boards. You'll spot us easily once you're inside. Come say hello.

**Is there a cost?** The club is free. Most people grab a tea, coffee, or a pint. The venue looks after us, so we look after them.

**What skill level?** All levels, from complete beginners to experienced players. Everyone's welcome.

**Is there an online community?** Most regulars are in the club WhatsApp group. Ask anyone on the night to be added. The [Irish Go Association Discord](https://discord.com/invite/4vSnhjd) also has a Galway channel.
